The Doorway Letter — Issue 1
Help for home transitions in San Diego, once a month, from Doorway.
Hi, I'm Garrett. I started Doorway because almost every family I meet who's dealing with a house — after a death, a parent's move, a big change — says the same thing: 'We just don't know where to start.' This letter is the starting place. One helpful email a month. No provider promotions, ever.
If you inherited a home: the first two weeks matter most
Most of the expensive mistakes happen early, usually from rushing. In the first two weeks, the whole job is to protect the home and the paperwork:
- Secure the house. Re-key locks if keys are unaccounted for, set lights on timers, and ask a neighbor to keep an eye out.
- Call the insurance carrier. An empty home can change the coverage — ask about a vacant-home endorsement before you need it.
- Forward the mail. Bills, tax notices, and statements need to reach someone who's watching.
- Order extra death certificates. Banks, insurers, and the county will each want a certified copy.
- Don't clear anything out yet. Photograph every room first. Once things are gone, they're gone — inventory now, decisions later.
The full checklist (including months one and two, and how to think about the clear-out) is here: Inherited a Home in San Diego? Your First-Steps Checklist.
A downsizing idea that actually works: sort in passes
If you're helping a parent move to a smaller home, don't try to decide everything in one weekend. Sort in three passes, days apart:
- Essentials and treasures — what definitely goes with them.
- The maybes — box them, label them, revisit in a week. Half decide themselves.
- Everything else — family first, then donation, then an estate sale or cleanout for the rest.
One room at a time, and let the stories be told along the way. It's slower on paper and faster in real life.
Downsizing a parent's home without the overwhelm
One small thing to do this month
If there's a family home anywhere in your future — yours, a parent's — take ten minutes and make sure someone besides the owner knows where the will or trust, the deed, and the insurance paperwork live. That single piece of knowledge saves families weeks later.
When you're ready
If you're in the middle of one of these situations now, Doorway can match you with local help in San Diego County — free for families, and your details go only to a provider you approve.
